Anaheim Ducks Reshape Broadcasting Approach for Greater Fan Access

In a revolutionary move to enhance accessibility and fan engagement, the Anaheim Ducks are transitioning their local game broadcasts to a mix of direct-to-consumer streaming and local over-the-air broadcasts. The strategic shift comes as part of a broader initiative to widen the reach of Ducks' games throughout their TV market.

Enhanced Accessibility for Fans

Starting next season, 65 of the Ducks' games will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, making it easier for local fans to catch the action on their televisions. Additionally, all of the games will be streamed regionally on the Victory+ streaming service at no cost to viewers. This dual approach ensures that Ducks fans have multiple, accessible platforms to enjoy their favorite team’s games.

Ducks President Aaron Teats expressed his excitement about the new arrangement, stating, “We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge.”

Introducing Victory+ Streaming

The Victory+ streaming platform, which will offer a free, ad-supported service, is set to be a game-changer for regional sports broadcasting. The app will be available for download on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September, extending its reach to fans on the go. This initiative highlights the Ducks’ commitment to providing accessible and convenient viewing options for their supporters.

New Partnerships and Broadcasting Team

The Ducks have partnered with A Parent Media to facilitate this new broadcasting arrangement. Jason Walsh, the Chief Operating Officer at A Parent Media, commented on the collaboration: “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both organizations to deliver high-quality broadcasts to fans.

Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain as part of the Ducks' broadcast team, ensuring continuity and familiarity for long-time viewers. Their experience and expertise will undoubtedly enhance the viewing experience for fans tuning in through the new platforms.

Transition from Diamond Sports Group

This change comes as the Ducks’ contract with their former broadcaster, Diamond Sports Group, expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently entangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, will still carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and hold agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).

However, the Ducks’ decision to shift to Victory+ and local broadcasts marks a significant departure from their previous broadcasting model. This move aligns with a growing trend among sports teams seeking to take greater control over their broadcasting rights and make their content more readily available to fans.

Expanding the Regional Reach

The Ducks’ regional territory is extensive, encompassing Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii. By making their games available on Channel 13 and the Victory+ app, the Ducks aim to ensure that fans across this vast region can watch the games without any cost barriers.

Aaron Teats emphasized the importance of this comprehensive approach: “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.”

Industry-Wide Trend

The Ducks are not the only team making changes to their broadcasting strategy. The Florida Panthers are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. These shifts reflect a broader industry trend towards more flexible and accessible broadcasting solutions, catering to the evolving needs of modern sports fans.

Looking Forward

The Anaheim Ducks’ new broadcasting model is a testament to their forward-thinking approach and dedication to their fan base. By embracing both traditional and modern platforms, they are setting a new standard in sports broadcasting, one that prioritizes accessibility, engagement, and quality. Fans can look forward to a new season of Ducks hockey with the assurance that they will not miss any of the action, no matter where they are in the region.
