A Season of Struggles

A Season of Struggles

The 2022-23 season was a challenging one for the Columbus Blue Jackets under the stewardship of head coach Pascal Vincent. The team finished with a disappointing 27-43-12 record, which placed them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and resulted in them having the fourth-fewest points in the entire NHL. This marked their fourth consecutive season missing the playoffs.

November was particularly brutal, as the Blue Jackets endured nine straight losses and managed to win only three out of their 15 games that month. The season was also marred by eight separate three-game losing streaks, culminating in a four-game spiral from April 7 through April 13. The team allowed the second-most goals per game, had the second-worst power play, and ranked in the bottom 10 in penalty killing. Offensive struggles were also evident as the Blue Jackets scored the 24th fewest goals per game.

Leadership Changes

These dismal performances led to significant leadership changes within the organization. In February, the Blue Jackets fired General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen, who had been with the team since the 2012-13 season. By May, the organization moved swiftly to bring in Don Waddell, the former General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, to fill the roles of GM and President of Hockey Operations.

Waddell's main challenge upon assuming his new roles was to address the head coaching position. His task is no small feat, as he needs to steer the team in a new direction and re-establish a winning culture in Columbus.

Vincent’s Short Tenure

Pascal Vincent's time with the Blue Jackets had a rather abrupt beginning and end. His association with the team began in the 2021-22 season when he was hired as an assistant coach. However, he was thrust into the head coach position under unusual circumstances. Less than a month before the 2022-23 regular season commenced, Mike Babcock resigned amid allegations of violating players' privacy, thus promoting Vincent to the head coach role.

Despite the tumultuous season, Vincent was highly commended for his dedication and work ethic. He worked diligently under trying circumstances, earning the respect of his peers and players alike. In a statement, the organization mentioned, "As I spent time with Pascal over the past few weeks, I found him to be an outstanding person and smart hockey coach who worked very hard under trying circumstances. But I believe a change behind the bench is in our team's best interest."

The statement continued, "On behalf of our organization, I want to thank Pascal for his work ethic, professionalism, and contributions during his three seasons with the Blue Jackets."

Looking Forward

The Blue Jackets are now the only NHL team with a head coaching vacancy. As of now, eight teams have hired a new coach or promoted an interim coach to a permanent role, with Ryan Warsofsky being the most recent addition for the San Jose Sharks.

The incoming coach will face formidable challenges, including revamping a squad that has underperformed consistently. Across the board, improvement is necessary, from defense to offense and special teams. The Blue Jackets' faithful hope that new leadership can reinvigorate the team, restoring it to its former glories and bringing renewed success.

The franchise, poised to embark on a new chapter, looks forward with cautious optimism. The hope is that with the new GM and an incoming head coach, the Blue Jackets can address their shortcomings and set a new course toward success. The team and its fans remain hopeful that brighter days are on the horizon, and a new era of Blue Jackets' hockey is about to begin.
