Jordan Spieth to Sit Out Remainder of 2024 After Wrist Surgery

Jordan Spieth, the celebrated PGA Tour professional known for his dramatic victories and relentless perseverance, recently announced he will sit out the remainder of 2024 following surgery on his left wrist. This news comes as a significant blow to golf fans worldwide, as Spieth has been a prominent figure in the sport since he burst onto the scene in his early 20s.

A History of Struggles

Spieth's wrist troubles have been a persistent issue over the last several years. The problems began surfacing in late 2017 or early 2018, yet the golfer managed to compete through persistent discomfort. Matters took a turn for the worse in May of last year when a poolside incident with his son led to a severe wrist dislocation. This precipitated his withdrawal from the Byron Nelson tournament the following week. Since February 2024, Spieth has reportedly experienced about 20 wrist dislocations, significantly hampering his iron play throughout the season.

"I didn't get it fixed maybe then, and I kind of got into some bad habits," Spieth reflected. "And then as I started to swing it better a few years ago, it started to kind of act up again."

The Decision for Surgery

The ongoing issues left Spieth with no choice but to consider surgery, especially after nearly bowing out of the John Deere Classic due to another dislocation. Rest was simply not a viable solution anymore. “It was something that couldn't fix itself with rest, unfortunately. So that's why I ended up having to do this," Spieth explained.

Despite the severity of his condition, Spieth pushed through the major part of the 2024 season, almost opting for surgery in July but deciding instead to persevere until the season's end. During this period, Spieth's game was inconsistent, often leading to regretful performances.

"Like I said, I really didn't wanna make any excuses for myself the whole year because it wasn't hurting to hit the shot," he stated. "And then I'd get into competition, and then I'd just bail. It was very strange. So I guess it was a big enough sample size over a year, you'd think it frustrates you after a week or two, but for me, I just kind of kept thinking, 'You know, hey, this is just something mechanically I gotta fix.’"

The Road to Recovery

Spieth's surgical procedure seems to have been met with optimism. "Anytime a guy who does, you know, 30,000 to 40,000 surgeries is excited about something, you know, that's reason for me to feel good about it, I guess," said Spieth.

The procedure, along with rigorous rehabilitation, is expected to improve his condition significantly. “In due time, it should be better than it was before,” Spieth shared, reflecting a hopeful outlook on his recovery process. The seasoned golfer has consulted various athletes who have undergone similar surgeries, with many providing encouraging advice. "I talked to a lot of different players who've had similar operations and a lot of guys across different sports, and they're like, 'Look, one day you'll wake up and, if you're patient enough, you do the right rehab, you listen to your docs and you take your time, there'll be one day where you wake up and you're like, 'Man, I just totally forgot that there was ever an issue.' So I look forward to that day," Spieth mentioned.

What's Next for Spieth?

While Spieth remains hopeful and positive about his recovery, he acknowledges the lengthy journey ahead. He expects to start hitting balls again by November 2024, although playing in any events in December 2024 appears unlikely. “Playing any events in December feels like a stretch,” he admitted, emphasizing the importance of a careful and measured comeback.

Beyond the physical toll, Spieth acknowledged the broader impact of his injury. The mental and emotional strain of coping with such setbacks, particularly in a sport as psychological as golf, cannot be understated. By consulting with peers who have faced similar challenges, Spieth aims to maintain a balanced and positive approach during his hiatus.

As Spieth sets his sights on a strong comeback in 2025, the golf world watches and waits. His journey back to full health will undoubtedly be a testament to his resilience and determination, traits that have defined his career thus far. Fans and fellow athletes alike will be rooting for him, eager to witness his return to form and the continuation of a legacy still unfolding.
