When Mekhi Becton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in May, many speculated about his role within the team. Initially, Becton was seen as a backup for tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. However, the Eagles had a different plan in mind—they envisioned him playing at guard.
Becton’s tenure with the New York Jets was marked by injuries and inconsistent performances, but the Eagles saw potential in the 6-foot-7, 364-pound lineman. With his impressive arm length, Becton brings a unique advantage to the interior line, particularly against defensive tackles. "I feel like I don’t really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," Becton noted.
During the Eagles’ mandatory minicamp, Becton showcased his versatility by stepping in at left guard. His opportunity arose when Landon Dickerson was absent for personal reasons and subsequently sidelined by a lacerated toe. Becton adapted quickly to the new position, providing a reliable option for the Eagles’ coaching staff. "I know I’m not, like that wasn’t the thing when they signed me here. I don’t have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I’m always gonna be ready," Becton confidently stated.
The transition from tackle to guard is not without its challenges. Becton acknowledged the faster pace of play inside, explaining, "Guard, it happens way faster. You don’t have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don’t have time to set up what you gotta set up. It’s real faster. It’s right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away."
Though he hasn’t yet played at right guard, Becton is competing against Tyler Steen for the starting spot. The upcoming training camp and preseason games will be crucial as Becton aims to prove his capability in this new role. "It’s an adjustment, but it’s not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he asserted, displaying a positive attitude towards the challenge.
The Eagles have shown confidence in Becton, giving him the first call to fill any voids at the guard position. His willingness to learn and adapt has been evident. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It’s a fun thing to do," Becton said, reflecting on his time with the team.
Understanding the different dynamics at each position on the offensive line, Becton explained the nuances, "At tackle, you got a little bit of time to see what [the defense] is doing. You have time to figure out if you’re in the right spot or not." This insight highlights his growing knowledge and adaptability, which will serve him well as he vies for a significant role with the Eagles.
Becton remains focused on being ready for any role the team requires. "If I can start, I’ll start. If I don’t, I’ll be ready," he stated, embodying a team-first mentality. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining Becton’s place in the Eagles' lineup, as he prepares to face the tests of training camp and preseason games.
As the Eagles continue their preparations for the upcoming season, Becton’s journey will be one to watch. His unique physical attributes, combined with his determined mindset, could make him a valuable asset on the Eagles’ offensive line. "I don’t know what I’m gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," Becton concluded, summing up his readiness for the road ahead.
