The Philadelphia Eagles have added a significant piece to their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton. Originally brought in to serve as a swing tackle backing up Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton's role with the team has evolved rapidly due to recent developments.
Filling the Void at Right Guard
The Eagles were presented with an unexpected challenge when Tyler Steen suffered an ankle injury, leaving a vacancy at the starting right guard position. Becton, who did not participate during the early days of training camp, found himself thrust into a critical role sooner than anticipated. During his first practice with the team’s starters, Becton lined up as the right guard and effectively neutralized standout defensive tackle Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni commented on Becton's adaptability and readiness, saying, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."
Staying Engaged and Learning
Though Becton did not practice during the initial training camp sessions, he used that time wisely to stay engaged and learn from his teammates. This diligence was noticed by his peers, including Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, who praised Becton's versatility and willingness to contribute wherever needed.
Dickerson remarked, "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?”
The Value of Versatility
Becton's ability to function in multiple positions along the offensive line adds tremendous value to the team. When discussing Becton's versatility, Dickerson highlighted, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
Becton himself reflected on his role with the team: "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready."
The Uncertain Timeline of Steen's Return
The Eagles have not disclosed the duration of Tyler Steen's absence. This uncertainty necessitates a flexible and resilient approach from the rest of the offensive line. Becton's proactive mindset and readiness to adapt have positioned him as a vital component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line.
Ready to Step Up
Despite the unexpected circumstances that led to his immediate involvement, Becton has demonstrated his readiness and capability on the field. His engagement during training camp, even when sidelined, exemplifies his commitment to the team’s success.
Becton acknowledged his approach during those early camp days, noting, "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help."
The integration of Becton into the starting lineup, at least temporarily, underscores the Eagles' ability to adapt and optimize their roster. With key players like Landon Dickerson supporting and guiding him, Becton has rapidly become an essential part of the team’s offensive strategy. As the season progresses, his flexibility and readiness will undoubtedly continue to be an asset for the Eagles.
