New York Mets right-hander Christian Scott is slated for elbow surgery next week to address his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The procedure, which will involve installing an internal brace, is expected to sideline Scott through the 2025 season.
Scott's absence has been felt since July 21, and he was officially placed on the injured list two days later. The Mets initially described his injury as a UCL strain, but it has now escalated to a point where surgery is deemed necessary.
This is not the first time Scott has faced elbow issues. His troubles date back to last season when he missed over two weeks late in the campaign due to similar problems. Despite the persistent issues, Scott managed to start nine big-league games this season, recording a 4.56 ERA and a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio before his injury cut his 2023 season short.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has emphasized a cautious approach in handling Scott's injury. "It's too early to tell," Mendoza said. "I'm not going to sit here and speculate when we don't have all the facts and all the information. We've got to wait till the doctors and all the people that have to read the MRI and all that, and then we'll make that decision."
Scott is not the only key player missing from the Mets rotation. Starters Kodai Senga and Paul Blackburn are also absent, with Blackburn recently being shut down due to a spinal fluid leak in his back.
Mets' Playoff Push
Despite these significant injuries, the Mets have managed to compile an 83-68 record as they enter Wednesday's games. They are currently tied for the second wild-card spot in the league alongside the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets maintain a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, the first team outside the playoff bracket.
The Mets' upcoming three-game series in Atlanta could have pivotal implications for their playoff hopes. With the playoff race tight, every game counts, and the Mets are focusing on their remaining games to secure their postseason position.
The Mets have shown resilience and determination to remain competitive despite the setbacks. Manager Carlos Mendoza's careful management and the team's overall tenacity have been crucial in navigating the season's challenges. As they prepare for the critical series in Atlanta, the Mets aim to stay focused and capitalize on their opportunities.
Injuries are an inevitable part of sports, but how a team handles them can define its season. The Mets, with their eyes firmly set on the playoffs, continue to demonstrate their depth and resilience, hoping to overcome these hurdles and make a deep run in the postseason.
