Despite his efforts to return to the mound, setbacks have prevented him from advancing to the stage of a rehab assignment. His most recent setback occurred in early July, diminishing hopes that he would rejoin the team this season.
Joe Espada, the Astros' bench coach, expressed his concerns, stating, "The Houston Astros will likely be without right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. for the remainder of the regular season." Given McCullers' prolonged absence, it appears increasingly unlikely that he will make a comeback before the season concludes.
A Career Marred by Injuries
McCullers, who made his debut in the major leagues in 2015, has compiled a robust record over his career, making 130 appearances with an impressive 3.48 ERA (118 ERA+). He has demonstrated his prowess with a commendable 2.70 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Nevertheless, his career has frequently been interrupted by injuries, limiting his ability to stay on the field consistently.
The 2021 season marked the only time McCullers surpassed the 150-inning threshold, highlighting the persistent challenge of maintaining his health.
